How do you create beautiful Blond highlights at home and maintaining them?

I want to streak/highlight my hair for summer. I do not want to go to a salon, however I want the best results I can possibly get. My hair is light brown. I want all over highlights and I want to frame my face with Platinum streaks maybe 5 or so and the rest medium blond.

1. What is the best product to use?

2. What tools and methods do I need to do to get the results that i need?

3. How do I maintain it?

How do you create beautiful Blond highlights at home and maintaining them?

Hey Layla-

I've done at home highlighting and frosting quite a few times, and I definitley know what works best.

The absolute best thing you can do to get platinum highlights is to go to Sallys (if there is one around- the closest one to here is like 30 miles away!) Sallys carries both at home highlighting kits AND the cream and powder for highlights that they put in a highlighting kit box, but for half the price!!

It costs me about 4 dollars and 30 cents for the bottle of cream developer and the packet of powder you need. If you want a highlighting cap they are about a buck so all together its about 5 bucks, and you can use the bottle like...4 times and the powder 3 times- it's way cheaper then a highlighting kit that costs around 10$ and it works seriously like....3 times better.

You have to get 40 VOLUME cream developer and 40 VOLUME powder. The developer is in a small bottle that's a little bigger then a travel size shampoo bottle, and the powder packages should be right next to it. There are all sorts of brands, but they all work the same.

If thats what you decide to do (because it saves money and the results are way better then a boxed highlighting kit)- when you get home- use a cup or a bowl and dump in half the powder package- and 1/4th of the developer- if it's too runny and not pasty (not super thick) like it's SUPPOSED TO BE- then add a little more powder.

Mix it very well- but before making the mixture put on your highlighting cap first. If you want brighter- or more noticeable streaks in the front framing your face then you need to pull a little more hair out of the hole and use a little extra cream on that part of your hair (you will also need a hair pulling pick that costs about 35 cents at Sallys- sorry I forgot to mention that!)

When you are all done- cover your highlights in plastic on top of your head and let it sit for about 45 minutes- you could rinse your highlights in the back and all over, and leave the front ones in for an hour if you want them brighter. It's easier DONE then said- but I explained it as well as I could.

If this sounds too confusing then your best bet would be to go to Walmart, or Rite-Aid- Kmart- and just buy an at home highlighting kit for about 10$ and up- it comes with everything you need- look out for "dramatic results" on the box, because that will give you the best look- and leave it in for an hour for best results, no longer, or you may get break offs, which totally suck and weaken your hair super bad!!!!!!

In order to maintain your highlights- use a vitamin enriched shampoo like Pantene or Dove (the 2 best) for COLOR TREATED HAIR- or there is a shampoo line by John Freida that you can use called Brilliant Blonde. The shampoo doesn't smell good, but it has blonde enhancing chemicals in it to maintain the color. For touch-ups just re-highlight from the root with the left over powder and developer.

Hope this helps!!

I don't know if this would help with the platinum and the blonde but I know there is a really good at home highlight kit where you put the dye in a small green comb and comb it through your hair in streaks. My friend has used it and it comes out looking very professional. I can't remember what the brand is but it shows the comb on the front of the box.

when my hair was a fake red color, I had some blonde highlights put in as well but i didnt like them so i decided to buy black box dye and put black streaks in there instead. What i did was a took a fine comb, with a long skinny handle, and took one section of hair that was a combination of where i usually part my hair. weave the handle of the comb in and out the section to create little strips and slowly let go so the loose pieces fall and you are holding 4-5 little strips of hair that you will be dying. My hairdresser taught me how to do this and IT WORKED! its a hell of a lot more successful than just grabbing a strip of hair randomly on your head.
