Hair damage and hair die... HELP!?

My mom won't let me highlight my hair because she says it damages the hair and I won't ever be able to repair it. Like it will lose its shine or something. Is this true? If so, do you know of any way of dying it temporarily, or with less damage? Help please, my mom says I have brown hair with natural highlights, BUT I can't see them. And obviously not a lot of people can either because people have said that I have black hair...

It damages your hair, but so does everything else you do to it on a daily basis including washing. If you go to a professional the damage will be minimized and there is even professional color lines that have conditioners built in (such as one of Joico's lines has K-pak in it) to prevent and actually helps severely damaged hair.

If i were you I would start with highlights in a few light brown shades, that way it looks natural, it is very little damage and it will actually Make your hair look shiny and give it more depth. Once your mom sees that your hair is fine you can probably go for something more dramatic if you wanted.

Lightening with bleach will always cause more damage than going draker or only lightening a couple shades with a color alone.

don't start dying your hair, even if its temporary....it's kinda addictive in its own little way. And yes, it does damage your hair a lot

not all products damage hair...dont do it yourself if you dont know what you are doing....you CAN and will damage your hair if you repeatedly color your hair the wrong way ...and make sure you get regular trims.

no i just did the same thing. my hair looks fine and it looks shinier than last time, if you go to a good salon, they have good products which make it healthier while they give you the highlights. id say go for it

Personnaly I think your mom is right, I don't like highlights either except if they are not too far from your normal hair colour. It does damage your hair and then you have no choice then wait for it to grow again. If your highlights aren't too far away from your normal colour, I guess it could be alright but you should stay with your normal hair colour, especially if you make your hair blond when they are dark.

'you wont ever be able to repair it' is a lie all your hair will eventually fall out and new strings of hair will grow, of course changing all your hair can take a very long time

Yes dying you hair excessively can damage your hair over time but I dye my hair alot and my hair is damaged and highlights wont ruin your hair and most likely wont cause you to lose shine but usually darker colors will like rejuvinate your hair and make it look healthy and lighter colors like blonde will make it look crappy and will ruin your hair but I say go for it, because in your case it wont even phase your hair.
